Iolite

iolite

Iolite, the gem name for cordierite, derives its name from the Greek ion (violet).  Iolite is dichroic, meaning its hue appears to change when it is viewed from different angles.  The violet blue will appear to change to grayish as it is rotated from one crystal plane to another.

Iolite was once called "water sapphire" a reference to its bluish-lavender color.

Lore

Iolite is said to enhance one's will power.  It also assists one in gaining insight when seeking truth.

It is said that the Vikings used a property of iolite, the ability of the stone to show different colors from different directions (pleochroism), to assist in navigation.

When used on the 3rd chakra iolite is thought to enhance shamanic visions and other psychic abilities.  "It is useful for the stimulation of visions and has also been used in shamanic healing ceremonies to influence the spirits.  The iolite ring of the shaman is worn to ensure accuracy within the vision.  It is quite powerful 'medicine'. 1
