Psilomelane

psilomelane

Psilomelane is a widespread manganese mineral often found as a thin crust, druse or botryoidal massive form.  Psilomelane is often banded with gray pyrolusite; the alternating layers make an attractive polished stone with bands of metallic gray and sub metallic black in a whirling pattern reminiscent of damascus steel or malachite.

The name psilomelane is from the Greek psilos, "smooth," and melas, "black."

Lore

Psilomelane is primarily used for meditation purposes.  It is said that it helps one to understand the patterns of their emotions.

Some believe that it bestows to ability to astral travel.

Medicinally, psilomelane is used for upper respiratory problems.  "This mineral can be used in the treatment of pneumonia, to clear the mucus from the lungs, and to provide for the stabilization of the inner walls of the lungs." 1

"New Age believers maintain the psilomelane, worn or carried, enhances psychic vision and development." 2
