Sphene
The name, "sphene," comes from the Greek sphen, "wedge," a reference to the characteristic shape of the crystals. Also known as titanite, so named for its titanium content. A beautiful stone, its dispersion is higher than that of a diamond. It has very intense fire and excellent luster. Sphene is generally classed as a collector's stone; faceted stones in sizes over two or three carats are uncommon. Lore "This greenish-yellow stone is rarely found in transparent crystals. . . . When found it is used to improve the mind and the processing of information. It is excellent for studying, theorizing, and debating." 1 Sphene is a stone of consolation and solace. It is said to dispel disenchantment and bring forth comfort and encouragement. ". . . sphene can be used to open the door to new levels of experience or to gain access to deeply entrenched conditions, making it an important healing stone."2 "Helpful to those who work in areas that demand compassion, such as hospitals, nursing homes, or with mentally disturbed people. It is also helpful to those who must care for sick or disturbed family members."3
