Sugilite

Also known as luvulite or royal azele.  Massive sugilite occasionally contains translucent gemmy portions known as "gel" which fetches higher prices. The color range includes violet-pink to purple. This gem was initially discovered in Japan in 1944 by professor Kenichi Sugi, a petrologist, after whom sugilite is named.

Lore

Because of its relatively recent discovery sugilite has only just begun to accumulate lore.  Adherents of the New Age philosophies believe sugilite to be a healing stone that balances the emotions.  Sugilite is thought to reduce stress, anger and discomfort.  It is also an excellent stone for meditation and is said to enhance channeling abilities.

"As with most purple stones, sugilite is also worn for healing.  It is also contemplated or worn during meditation to increase awareness of the spiritual world and is also worn to obtain wisdom." ¹
